Book Review: The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau

Title: The $100 Startup

Author: Chris Guillebeau

Publisher: Pan Macmillan

Pages: 285

Price: Rs. 499

Summary: A guide for converting your passion to profitable business for $100

The $100 Startup is largely for the people who already own a job and prefers to walk of the regular 9 to 5 job to work on something on your own. The book will help you brainstorm your ideas and learn how people come up with ideas expectedly or unexpectedly (due to circumstances) to venture out with a new mirco business. Chris Guillebeau focuses on two themes, ‘Freedom’ and ‘Value’ throughout the book. He shows you how you can turn your passion to profit, but not all hobbies can be converted to business or profit.

The book is perfect for you, if you are looking for inspiration. Read the innumerous stories Chris Guillebeau has compiled through in-depth research to motivate the readers to think out of the box to generate ideas and start from there. The real-life stories in The $100 Startup will make you realize, passion is more important to start a new venture, instead of a high-education or big money.

I choose to read The $100 Startup with great expectations. Later, I was to realize, it isn’t good to have much expectations of a book, to enjoy the book thoroughly.

The $100 Startup could help inspire people but it is not a typical how-to-start a home business guide. Instead of adding stories of 50 people, the author could have gone on depth on how to start a new venture detail; any aspiring mirco business man would love to know.

Personally, I found the contents in the boxes and the key points as the most interesting and informative part. It is these parts that make the book stand out. The short ‘One-Page Business Plan,’ is outstanding, a must for all aspiring business people. Otherwise, the book structure was more like a school or college text-book. Re-framing the content structure could have made the book more appealing and interesting to read.

Nevertheless, the $100 Startup is a good book for who are thinking of leaving their full time job or possibly facing the consequences of recession, to start a new life at work. And the book will make you think creatively for ideas to start business ventures, most often for less than $100.
